DIY Try: Coconut Oil Hair Mask

 via

I've been reading about the "magic" of coconut oil for basically everything for a while now and over the weekend my boredom curiosity finally got the better of me and I picked up some coconut oil to try out.

Since I really need a haircut and have yet to find a salon in Atlanta that's both good and reasonably priced, my ends are very dry and not very pretty at all. And really, all of my hair was looking a little shabby and sad. A coconut oil mask was exactly what I needed.

I'm sure there are better ways of doing this, but I just slathered handfuls of coco oil on my hair from my roots to my ends until my hair was completely saturated. Fair warning: I got my coco oil at Trader Joe's in the cooking section (it's totally fine for hair, don't worry), and it was a little chunky and totally unappetizing...I had to restrain my gag reflex about 45 times. And everyone had told me/I'd read that the coconut smell wasn't very noticeable...I disagree.

Anyway. Once my hair and my sink and my counter were totally covered in oil, I let it sit for 15 minutes or so. A shower cap would definitely have been useful, as I kept finding drips of oil running down my face. Thankfully, Oscar loves the taste of coconut oil and helpfully licked my face free of oil. After the 15-20 minutes were up/I couldn't stand the smell of coconut anymore, I showered and washed my hair with shampoo. I recommend shampooing twice, as I only did it once and after my hair dried, it looked like it hadn't been washed in about a year. After washing my hair the next morning, my hair looked much better.

My overall verdict? The results are pretty great, but in order to maintain the moisture, I'd have to do a mask every single night, and I cannot stand the smell of coconut oil that much. I'll keep doing the mask until I use up the jar of coconut oil...but I can't definitively commit to doing it for the rest of my life.

If you want to try this out yourself, I have a few tips. First, I'd suggest melting the coconut oil in the microwave first so you can just pour it on your hair. Second, I'd recommend doing it in the shower because I am still finding chunks of coconut oil around my bathroom and I didn't even make that much of a mess.

Have you tried coconut oil on your hair? Please share any tips, tricks or experiences in the comments--I'm all ears!

  1. Just found your blog through the fabulous Carylee at More Pieces of Me. :) So jealous that you got to meet her! I too succumbed to the "try a coconut oil mask on your hair!" instructions from the internet. I had pretty much the same result as you- total greasy, stringy mess that day. The next day it was a little better, but like you said, I'm not willing to keep dealing with the greasy grossness for the minor improvement 2 days later. I have, however, really been liking the coconut oil on my nails and fingertips after I remove nail polish to re-moisturize. So if you need a way to use up the rest of that jar, you might like that!

  2. I love coconut oil! I use it every day on my ends. It really helps with frizz, ends not getting dry & protects my ends from the curling iron heat.
