I randomly went to the movies the other night (we saw the new Hobbit movie...I slept through about 1/3 of it...) and one of the previews was for the new movie Her. I'm actually a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I was tearing up through the entire preview.

Basically the movie is about a guy who falls in love with a computer/operating system thing...it sounds bizarre and weird, but the movie is so sweet and touching. It's obviously a commentary on how fully integrated technology is with our lives, but also brings up the possibility of falling in love with someone you've never met face-to-face.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie, but I don't know if I'll be able to watch it in the theater! It might be one that I wait to see at home so I can pause it/watch by myself.

Ryan Lochte. So much potential in that face of his, until he opens his mouth (see here). I can't imagine who at E! thought it was a great idea to give this guy his own show, even if he is incredibly attractive.

What Would Ryan Lochte Do? premiered the other night and while I didn't watch it, this clip hits the highlights, as it were. From his "fashion" dreams to the Lochterage, there's so much he just doesn't get. I find him totally hilarious and the tiniest bit endearing. I think that WWRLD? is definitely going to be my new feel-good television show based purely on this recap by Vulture.

I know this is roughly 5 years too late, but I am officially addicted to Gossip Girl. I watched the pilot the other night on a whim because I needed a new show on Netflix and 6 episodes later, I was hooked.

It has all of the things I look for in a fluff TV show: great clothes, juicy drama, enviable apartments, girls with impossibly perfect hair, and of course, hot boys. All so much fun.

Are you on Team Blair or Team Serena? Are you more of a Dan fan, a Nate girl or a Chuck fan? I, for the record, as of Episode 13, am Team S, Team Serena & Dan, and allllll about Nate. It's nice to know that even though the characters may be fabulously wealthy, they're not immune to hardships.

If you've been a GG fan since the beginning, you know what I'm talking about. If you've never seen the show, watch the first episode and try it...you'll get hooked. I'm actually super psyched to watch every season now, even though I know who Gossip Girl really is (I peeked at series finale spoilers...).

Oscars Fashion

So last night was the biggest, most important night in Hollywood--the Oscars/Academy Awards. I didn't watch any of the red carpet coverage but I do have opinions on dresses, both good and bad, and really that's way more fun to go over than who won what, right?

Here we go!

LOVED:

 Sally Field: Possibly channeling a little Mary Lincoln, but she looks phenomenal. This is so chic and elegant and age-appropriate but not old/matronly and I really just want to be her

Naomi Watts: Sparkle, interesting neckline, sleek, nothing too frou-frou, relaxed hair and just-right makeup. I think she gets my Best Dressed vote!

LIKED:

Octavia Spencer: War Eagle to my girl Octavia. She always knows how to dress for her body without looking like she rolled around in a bolt of fabric. I wish this was a color, but I don't hate it as-is

 Jessica Chastain: She looks great, but I wish the color of the dress was just a touch darker. Her hair/makeup is ON POINT though

Jane Fonda: This is great. I love a unique, bold color for events because it's so different and really stands out. I'm also really loving longsleeved gowns right now. A little bit 80s, but I can dig it

Kelly Osbourne: I hate her hair color, but this dress is so pretty on her. I really like the sheer parts with the sparkles and the neckline/straps. Very nice.

 Charlize Theron: This is so sleek and structured. It doesn't come across in the photo, but the peplum had little pearls or beads or something all over, and it really just works for her. And that haircut is making me want to chop my own hair off!

As far as dresses I didn't like, I didn't like Anne Hathaway's at all. It was very 90s and not too flattering either. I wasn't a fan of Samantha Barks's look, but mostly because it just looked fine. If I was going to the Oscars, I would probably dress up a little bit more.

 On another Oscars-related note, if you were invited to the Oscars as a date or a nominee or really anything involving dressing up, what would you wear? I'm torn between this white Lanvin gown or this coral Badgely Mischka gown.

What Kate Likes: Netflix TV

I am kind of a Netflix addict. There, I said it. It's just so convenient! I only do the instant streaming, so I'm not sure what it's like getting the DVDs in the mail (do people do that still?), but I'm pretty satisfied with the selection. There are way more TV shows than movies, and the movie selection is kind of weird and random sometimes, but overall it's worth the $8 a month.

I feel like writing a Netflix post now is like 5 years overdue (it's fine, whatever), but I've found some pretty great shows and movies that I think are awesome and need to be viewed by everyone on the planet.

1. Sherlock.
I discovered Sherlock through one of my friends. Due to our mutual love of BBC shows and historical/literary shows, he thought I would love it. And of course, he was right. Basically it's a modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, and while that sounds weird, it's totally great. It's well-written, original, and you get hooked on it super fast. Plus Benedict Cumberbatch has the greatest name in the history of names. My only issue is that each season is SO short--only 3 episodes. Each episode is 2ish hours long, but I wish the seasons were longer.

2. Murdoch Mysteries
This is a Canadian show and I so wish I lived in Canada so I could catch up on seasons 4-6 since Netflix doesn't have them yet!! Basically Murdoch Mysteries is the 1890s version of CSI. The series follows Detective William Murdoch as he solves crimes (mostly murders) using the techniques available in the 1890s and some of the "newer" technology. It's fascinating to see how crimes were solved without any of the high-tech gadgets we have now, as well as seeing what life was like back then. One of my favorite things about the show is Dr. Julia Ogden, the medical examiner, mostly because she's a great strong female lead and it's really interesting seeing a woman in an (for the time) all-male profession and how the different characters react. Definitely one of my favorite shows.

3. Parenthood
I'm a few years late in discovering this show (apparently I never watch real TV channels enough...), but I caught up on the first 3 seasons quickly enough to now be up to date on the current season (Season 4). Oh my goodness. I love how multi-dimensional each character is and how well-written the show as a whole is. Some of the characters/storylines annoy me at times, but that's because they're so lifelike. I always want to go give my parents a big hug after each episode and thank them for everything they do for their children, because this show really does show what everyday struggles parents go through, what sacrifices they make, and how they unconditionally love their children. I typically cry at least once per episode, so make sure you watch with tissues. Team Braverman for life!

4. Murder, She Wrote
This is the comfort food of my Netflix queue. Whenever I've had a rough day or need to be cheered up or whatever, I turn to Jessica Fletcher and her endless supply of nieces, nephews, and cousins and everything is instantly better. Netflix has all 12 seasons (YAY!) so I'm rewatching them in order. Basically, Jessica Fletcher is a widow-turned-mystery writer who travels around the globe visiting people and places and someone just so happens to get murdered wherever she goes. Jessica then helps solve the mystery and saves the day (duh). I love how cheesy and 80s things can get (pay phones! computers that type in that weird font! floppy disks being the latest technology!), but it's endearingly sweet. I want to be JB Fletcher's sidekick forever and ever and hang out in Cabot Cove, Maine annoying Sheriff Tupper. So great. Angela Lansbury is the best. THE BEST, y'all.
